After finishing my Interview with my gran today, I have close to 100 pictures, 45 minutes of interview and a few pages of quickly scribbled notes!
I felt the interview went generally well, though some of my questions were not as open ended as I had intended them to be, meaning quite often I was left flicking through my notes to figure out where to continue on with the Interview. Luckily my gran is very natural at keeping a conversation going and I gained many insights that I wouldn’t have necessarily discovered if We had kept exactly to script. I found that even though I have known my gran the entirety of my 20 years, there were some things I didn’t know about her or her past that came up in the conversation.
After the interview I began scouring the house to take pictures, I have been here many hundreds of times and spent lots of time in my earlier years here and not a lot has changed, so I quickly came up with ideas for pictures. For the main image I decided to take the shot in my granddads room. A lot has changed in this room as his condition has deteriorated, A hospital style bed and plenty medicine on shelves. I took an image in here of my gran sitting looking out the window onto the world. The image suggest that the only free time she has is when my grandad is being looked after. This isn’t to suggest she is necessarily happy about it, but that working full time as his carer, means she’s doesn’t have much free time to herself.

For our Interaction Design Module next semester, we have been set the task of beginning research over the christmas break.
To explain the brief, we are working on developing iOS Apps for the older generation, based on ethnographic research we do. The focus is not to learn Objective C, but to understand how ethnographic research we do can effect our design thinking.
We have been tasked with interviewing to a grand person, In my case, my Gran, and asking them questions relating to their daily routines. Along with this we are to take pictures which help tell the story of their lives and look for details and nuances.
Once we return in january we will discuss our findings in groups, and work together to see if we can formulate ideas and concepts to develop into apps.
